2024 Goal: $100,000!
Overlooking almost two miles of Lake Tahoe shoreline, the Hellman-Ehrman Estate was constructed in 1903 as the summer home of California financial pioneer Isaias Hellman. His grand but informal summer home, called Pine Lodge, was completed in 1903 and is considered one of the finest examples of California Craftsman architecture in the high Sierra. His daughter, Florence Hellman Ehrman inherited the estate and she and her husband Sydney spent many summers here entertaining family and friends.
Now known as Ed Z’Berg Sugar Pine Point State Park, the property was acquired in 1965 by the State of California to become a California State Park and is a unique blend of nature's spectacular beauty and architectural ingenuity. It was at this time, when plans to tear down the buildings to make way for a campground were thwarted by local citizens, the seed for the Sierra State Parks Foundation was planted.
The need for funding to operate and maintain park historic structures continues to be a challenge. State resources are inadequate to meet the need and the Sierra State Parks Foundation has been stepping in to keep the historic house museum open and maintained since our inception. Over the past 50 years, The Foundation has funded hundreds of restoration projects at the Hellman-Ehrman Estate ranging from building stabilization to plaster repairs.
In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Sierra State Parks Foundation, the establishment of an endowment for the exclusive use for the restoration and maintenance of The Mansion and associated historic outbuildings, has been established to ensure funds will available to allow us to strategically implement the workplan to ensure this wonderful piece of Tahoe history is preserved….forever.
With $50,0000 seed money from an anonymous donor, our goal is to establish an endowment fund to return $100,000 annually for the exclusive needs of the Hellman-Ehrman Estate. The endowment will allow us to take care of both the immediate and long-term needs of this historic landmark today and for future generations.
